The simple order for first-time viewers

Start with the original Naruto. It introduces Team 7, the village system, the Chunin Exams, and the conflict that drives the transition into Shippuden. Do not start with a prequel clip, movie, or Boruto because each assumes the original cast and relationships already matter to you.

Move to Naruto Shippuden after episode 220. Shippuden begins after the story's time skip and completes Naruto's central journey. The official Crunchyroll Shippuden page records its 2007–2017 run and 500-episode conclusion.

Insert The Last near the end of Shippuden. The movie takes place after the main war and develops the relationship that the wedding episodes assume. A clean first-viewing placement is after episode 493, followed by episodes 494–500. VIZ describes The Last as the final chapter of Naruto's story.

Boruto is a sequel rather than another Shippuden season. It shifts attention to Naruto's son and the next generation. You can stop after Shippuden and The Last with a complete Naruto story, or continue into all 293 episodes of Boruto Part One.

How to watch Naruto without most filler

“Canon” is often presented as if the anime publisher issued one official spreadsheet. It did not. Fan databases classify episodes differently when an installment mixes manga material, anime-original transitions, adaptations of novels, or expanded scenes.

Use a practical story-first route instead:

1. Watch original Naruto episodes 1–135.
2. Skip the long anime-original run from 136–219 if momentum matters more than side missions.
3. Watch episode 220 because it hands the story into Shippuden.

5. Keep The Last in the route even when skipping the other movies.

This path deliberately leaves a few recaps and anime-original moments inside the first 135 episodes. It is easier to follow and less likely to cut a mixed episode in half than a “manga panels only” list.

What filler should a first-time viewer keep?

Keep an anime-original arc when it develops a character you already care about or gives you a break after a heavy story section. Skip it when it interrupts a cliffhanger, repeats information, or makes you lose track of the main conflict.

There are three original Naruto movies and seven Shippuden-era movies before Boruto: Naruto the Movie. You do not need to weave all of them into the television story.

Release order is the safest option for the optional films because it avoids showing abilities, designs, and team combinations before the television series introduces them. Exact episode insertion lists create false precision: most of these stories do not fit cleanly inside the weekly plot.

Should you watch Boruto: Naruto the Movie?

If you plan to watch the Boruto television anime, the movie is optional. The series revisits and expands its central Chunin Exam and Momoshiki material. Choose the movie for a shorter introduction, or choose the television version for the fuller Boruto route.

Do not watch the movie and then assume you can skip all early Boruto episodes. The anime establishes its own supporting cast and school-era relationships before reaching the retold material.

What comes after Naruto Shippuden?

After Shippuden episode 500, the clean sequence is:

1. The Day Naruto Became Hokage OVA, if available in your region.
2. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations episodes 1–293.
3. Wait for an official Boruto Part Two premiere announcement.

The NARUTO Official Site states that Boruto Part One ended with episode 293 on March 26, 2023 and that Part Two entered production. It does not provide a release date.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is the title of the current manga continuation. It is not a released anime season as of this status check. Pages and videos that tell you to begin “Two Blue Vortex anime episodes” are mixing manga publication with the announced but undated television production.

Current status of the postponed Naruto episodes

Four new Naruto anniversary episodes lost their September 3, 2023 broadcast slot. The production committee postponed the broadcast; its notice leaves the replacement schedule unresolved.

This status block will change only when an official production or distributor source supplies a date. A year in a headline is not evidence that an episode aired.

Where to watch Naruto legally

Availability changes by country, language, and licensing window. Search each title separately—Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, The Last, and Boruto—because a service carrying one does not guarantee it carries the others.
