Why Fate has more than one valid starting point

Fate/stay night began as a visual novel with three routes. They reuse the same opening situation, then follow different choices, characters, and revelations:

1. Fate route — centered on Saber; adapted most directly by the 2006 Fate/stay night television series.
2. Unlimited Blade Works route — centered on Rin and Shirou's ideals; adapted by the 2014–2015 ufotable series.
3. Heaven's Feel route — centered on Sakura and the Grail's hidden truth; adapted as three films.

The franchise's own Heaven's Feel introduction calls it the third route after Fate and Unlimited Blade Works (official explanation). The anime adaptations do not form three consecutive seasons. They are alternate paths through the Fifth Holy Grail War.

Fate/Zero is different. Its official introduction calls it the truth of the Fourth Holy Grail War, an event only described in fragments inside Fate/stay night (official Fate/Zero introduction). That makes it a chronological prequel, but a prequel written around information that stay night gradually reveals.

Choose the route that fits you

There is no single order that preserves every reveal because the anime versions adapt branches rather than one continuous script. For most new viewers, the first row is the clearest compromise.

Should you watch Fate/stay night (2006)?

Watch the 2006 series first if seeing Saber's route matters more to you than having a visually consistent ufotable run. It introduces a branch that neither Unlimited Blade Works nor Heaven's Feel replaces.

You can also postpone it. The streamlined route remains understandable without it, and starting with Unlimited Blade Works avoids asking a hesitant newcomer to begin with the oldest production. If you return later, treat it as another version of the Fifth Holy Grail War rather than a sequel.

Do not watch the 2010 Unlimited Blade Works film as an extra chapter after the television series. It is a compressed adaptation of the same route. Choose the 2014–2015 TV version for the fuller telling.

Where Fate/strange Fake fits in 2026

Watch Fate/strange Fake after the core Fuyuki material:

1. Fate/strange Fake: Whispers of Dawn — TV special
2. Fate/strange Fake — Episodes 1–13
3. The newly announced series — wait for an official release date

The official introduction places Snowfield several years after the Fifth Holy Grail War (official story introduction). The site labels Whispers of Dawn as the TV special that opens the conflict, then provides separate pages for Episodes 1–13 (official story index).

On August 22, 2026, the official news feed announced that a new series is in production (official announcement index). Until that follow-up receives a date, any schedule presented as confirmed is speculation.

Starting with Strange Fake is possible, but it is not the route we recommend. The series assumes comfort with Holy Grail War rules and deliberately echoes earlier Fuyuki events. It works better as an expansion after Unlimited Blade Works, Heaven's Feel, and Zero.

Most Fate spin-offs are branches, not steps in one master timeline. Pick the branch you want after learning the core concepts.

Fate/Apocrypha

Fate/Apocrypha is a self-contained alternate Holy Grail War in Romania. Its official introduction describes two factions and 14 Heroic Spirits fighting over the Greater Grail (official Apocrypha introduction). Watch its 25 episodes in numerical order after Unlimited Blade Works or Zero; the official story index runs from Episode 1 through Episode 25. No Heaven's Feel knowledge is required for its main plot.

Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files

Watch this after Fate/Zero. The official series material identifies Lord El-Melloi II as the adult Waver Velvet, one of the Fourth Holy Grail War's survivors (official series booklet). That connection is the reason for its placement; putting it before Zero gives away Waver's outcome. The official broadcast archive confirms Episode 0 through Episode 13 and the later special.

Use this order:

1. Episode 0: A Grave Keeper, a Cat, and a Mage
2. Episodes 1–13 of Rail Zeppelin Grace note
3. Waver, Reunion, and the Magic Lantern special

Fate/Grand Order anime

The Grand Order adaptations belong to their own game-based continuity. They adapt selected chapters, so the anime route intentionally jumps over several game Singularities:

1. Fate/Grand Order: First Order — the game prologue; Aniplex describes it as a full animation of the prologue (official Aniplex release)
2. Camelot: Wandering; Agateram — Sixth Singularity, first film

This route gives you the animated highlights, not a complete substitute for the game's first story arc. First Order covers the prologue, while the Camelot films begin at Singularity Six. Expect characters and events from the unanimated middle chapters to be referenced.

Other optional branches

• Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya: a separate magical-girl continuity. Watch its seasons and films in release order after learning the basic Servant concepts.
• Today's Menu for the Emiya Family: a relaxed alternate-life spin-off. Save it until after a stay night route so the cast relationships mean something.
• Fate/Extra Last Encore: a separate Moon Cell story. It is not the next season of stay night or Grand Order.
• Fate/Grand Carnival: comedy for viewers already familiar with Grand Order characters.

Release order versus chronological order

A single chronological Fate list creates more confusion than it solves. Apocrypha, Grand Order, Extra, Prisma Illya, and the three stay night routes do not line up as consecutive years in one shared television timeline.

Use chronology only inside a connected branch. Zero happens before stay night, Lord El-Melloi II follows Waver after Zero, and Strange Fake takes place years after the Fifth Holy Grail War. Even there, story order is usually better for a first viewing because prequels can reveal answers before the works that framed them as mysteries.
