The order is our editorial ranking. It weighs how easy each series is to start and finish and how different it is from the other nine. It does not use scores, sales or polls. Episode counts are TV episodes only. Films and specials are listed separately.

The US streaming column comes from JustWatch's US listing for each title. Links are in each entry below. Demon Slayer is also confirmed by its official US site. JustWatch shows that some services carry only some seasons of a show, so check the season list on your service before you subscribe. What "shonen" means

Shonen (少年, "boys") is an editorial category for manga aimed mainly at adolescent boys. It is one of the four main demographic categories, next to shojo, seinen and josei (Wikipedia: Shōnen manga). It describes who a magazine is published for, not what happens in the story. Shonen manga runs from action and adventure to comedy, crime, romance, slice of life and sports, and its actual readers go well beyond teenage boys.

The label usually comes from the magazine. The three biggest shonen magazines are Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump, Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine and Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday. Shonen Sunday and Shonen Magazine both launched in 1959, and Jump followed in 1968 (Wikipedia). Seven of the ten picks here come from Weekly Shonen Jump. The other three show how far the label stretches: Fullmetal Alchemist ran in Square Enix's monthly Shonen Gangan (VIZ), SPY x FAMILY runs on Shueisha's digital Shonen Jump+, and Mob Psycho 100 ran on Shogakukan's Ura Sunday website (Wikipedia).

1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Edward Elric lost an arm and a leg in a failed alchemy ritual, and his brother Alphonse ended up as a soul bound to a suit of armor. Edward joins the military as a state alchemist to search for the Philosopher's Stone that could restore them both (VIZ series page).

• Episodes: 64, aired from April 5, 2009 to July 4, 2010. There are also 4 OVAs and a spin-off film, The Sacred Star of Milos (Wikipedia episode list).
• Manga: Hiromu Arakawa's series debuted in 2001 in Square Enix's Shonen Gangan (VIZ). It ended in June 2010 after 27 volumes, and VIZ sells a Complete Box Set.
• US streaming: Crunchyroll, Netflix and Hulu (JustWatch US).
• Start point: Episode 1. Unlike the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist anime, which moved away from the manga early on, Brotherhood follows the whole manga story, so you don't need the older series first (Wikipedia). The spin-off film is optional.

Our read: It is our first pick because the whole story is animated and finished, and it covers the widest range of what shonen does in one series.

2. Haikyu!!

Shoyo Hinata wants to prove you don't need to be tall to play volleyball. The rival he lost to in middle school, Tobio Kageyama, ends up on his high school team (VIZ).

• Episodes: 85 across four seasons: 25 (2014), 25 (2015–16), 10 (2016) and 25 (2020) (Wikipedia episode list). JustWatch's US page also lists four seasons.
• Films: The story continues in the two-part Haikyu!! Final films. The Dumpster Battle came out in February 2024. The second film, Haikyu!! vs. The Little Giant, was green-lit in March 2025 alongside a new anime short (Anime News Network). We couldn't confirm its release date from an official page.
• Manga: Serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2012 (VIZ). It ended on July 20, 2020 with 45 volumes (Wikipedia).
• US streaming: Crunchyroll and Netflix (JustWatch US).
• Start point: Season 1, episode 1, then all four seasons in order, then The Dumpster Battle.

3. Hunter x Hunter (2011)

Gon sets out to become a Hunter, a licensed profession with an exam that fewer than one in a hundred thousand applicants pass, so he can follow the father he barely knows (VIZ).

• Episodes: 148, aired on Nippon TV from October 2, 2011 to September 23, 2014 (Wikipedia). The episode list runs from the Hunter Exam arc to the Election arc (Wikipedia episode list).
• Manga: Yoshihiro Togashi's series started in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1998 (Nippon TV). It is still running, with no end date and 39 volumes in Japan (Wikipedia). VIZ's newest English volume is Vol. 38 (VIZ).
• US streaming: Crunchyroll, Netflix, Hulu and Prime Video. It is also free with ads on Tubi and The Roku Channel (JustWatch US).

4. Death Note

Light Yagami finds a notebook dropped by a Shinigami. Anyone whose name he writes in it dies, and he decides to use it to rid the world of criminals (VIZ).

• Episodes: 37, first broadcast in October 2006, made by Madhouse. Nippon TV also lists two feature-length Relight specials, about 130 and 120 minutes long (Nippon TV).
• Manga: Serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump (Nippon TV) from December 2003 to May 2006. It is complete in 12 volumes (Wikipedia), and VIZ sells a Complete Box Set (VIZ).
• US streaming: Netflix, Hulu and Prime Video. It is also free with ads on Tubi, Pluto TV and The Roku Channel (JustWatch US).
• Start point: Episode 1. The 37 episodes are the whole series. The Relight specials are separate extras.

Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama is a middle schooler with huge psychic powers who struggles to control his emotions and be understood by other people (Wikipedia).

• Episodes: 37 across three seasons: 12 (2016), 13 (2019) and 12 (October to December 2022) (Wikipedia episode list). JustWatch's US page also lists three seasons.
• Manga: ONE's web manga ran on Shogakukan's Ura Sunday site from April 2012 to December 2017 (Wikipedia). The official anime site lists the collected manga as volumes 1 to 16.

• Start point: Season 1. The special Mob Psycho 100: Reigen The Miraculous Unknown Psychic aired on March 18, 2018, between Seasons 1 and 2, so watch it there if you want it (Wikipedia episode list).

6. Dr. STONE

One day all of humanity turns to stone. Thousands of years later, Taiju breaks free and finds his science-loving friend Senku, and the two set out to restart civilization with science (VIZ).

• Episodes: 94 across four seasons: 24 (2019), 11 (Stone Wars, 2021), 22 (New World, 2023) and 37 (Science Future, aired in three parts from January 2025 to June 25, 2026). The Dr. Stone: Ryusui special aired on July 10, 2022 (Wikipedia episode list). JustWatch's US page lists the same four seasons, with 37 episodes in Season 4.
• Manga: Serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from March 2017 to March 2022 (Wikipedia). VIZ labels Vol. 27 as the final volume (VIZ).

• Film: SPY x FAMILY Code: White opened in Japan in December 2023 and in the US and Canada in April 2024 (Wikipedia).
• Manga: Tatsuya Endo's web manga runs on Shonen Jump+. It started on March 25, 2019, is still ongoing, and has 17 volumes in Japan (Wikipedia). VIZ's newest English volume is Vol. 16 (VIZ).

Our read: No other pick has this much world to explore, but no other pick asks for this much time. We don't recommend it as a first shonen unless the length is the appeal.
