Our pick for the best manga to read in 2026 is One Piece if you want one huge ongoing adventure, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End for quiet fantasy, and Spy x Family for an easy first manga. If you want a story that has already ended, choose Delicious in Dungeon (14 volumes), Vinland Saga (ended July 25, 2025, 29 Japanese volumes) or Chainsaw Man (ended March 25, 2026, 24 Japanese volumes). All ten picks below have official English editions, and most can be sampled free through the publisher's own app or site.

This is an editorial ranking, not a sales chart or reader poll. The order reflects how broadly we think each series appeals and how clearly it does something the others don't. A lower pick can easily be the right one for you.

The 10 picks compared

A few notes on reading the table. "Latest English volume" means the newest volume already on sale as of September 23, 2026. Preorder dates for the next volume are in each entry. Vinland Saga's English edition collects two Japanese volumes per book, so its 15 English volumes cover all 29 Japanese ones. Blue Lock is the one pick where the English digital edition runs well ahead of print: digital Vol. 34 came out November 11, 2025, ten months before the print copy.

Cost and time to catch up in English (our calculation)

What it takes to read every English volume on sale today, bought new at the publisher's list price. Reading time assumes 200 pages an hour, about one volume an hour; if you read at 100 pages an hour, double the hours.

Checked on 2026-09-24 against the publishers' own product pages: VIZ Media for the six Shueisha and Shogakukan titles, Kodansha USA for Witch Hat Atelier, Blue Lock and Vinland Saga, and Yen Press for Delicious in Dungeon. How we worked it out:

• Volumes are the English print volumes released on or before September 24, 2026. Announced volumes that aren't out yet are left out.
• Price is the US print list price on each volume's product page. We checked the first and newest volume of every series, plus extra volumes where prices might differ. Every VIZ paperback we checked, including One Piece Vols. 1, 50, 100 and 112, lists at $11.99. Vinland Saga is the only series whose price changes between volumes. Retailer discounts, used copies and box sets will cost less.
• Digital total uses the digital list price on the same pages: $6.99 a volume at VIZ and Yen Press, $7.99 at Kodansha USA (Vol. 1 was $3.99 on the check date), and $17.99 per Vinland Saga omnibus.
• Pages are the average page count of the volumes we checked, times the number of volumes. Kodansha USA shows one page count for print and digital, so its figures may be slightly off for print.
• Blue Lock is the one series where digital runs ahead: 39 volumes digitally against 34 in print. Its hours are for the 34 print volumes.

Our read: One Piece is in a different league. Catching up in English costs $1,342.88 in print or $782.88 digitally and takes about 120 hours, 41% of the reading time for all ten picks together (292 hours). Kagurabachi is the cheapest and quickest catch-up at $95.92 and about 8 hours. For a finished story, Delicious in Dungeon costs $210.00 in print ($97.86 digital) and takes about 14 hours. Digital saves 42% on every VIZ title ($6.99 vs $11.99). If you only want to try a series, the free first chapters on MANGA Plus, VIZ and Kodansha's previews cost nothing (see the next section).

How to read these legally in English

Every pick has an official English digital route, and the free options differ by publisher.

Shueisha titles (One Piece, Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family, Dandadan, Kagurabachi) are on VIZ's Shonen Jump service. VIZ's FAQ says the latest chapters of many series come out the same day as Japan, that "the newest 3 chapters of ongoing series" are free, and that a $3.99/month membership unlocks a vault of more than 20,000 chapters, with the first week free for new members. Shueisha's own MANGA Plus shows the first chapters and "the latest 3 chapters" of each of these ongoing titles, plus a paid MANGA Plus MAX tier for the full run. VIZ's chapter pages send readers in some countries to MANGA Plus instead.

Frieren is on VIZ Manga, not Shonen Jump. The same VIZ FAQ names Frieren among the series whose new chapters are free on release day, with the full VIZ Manga library at $1.99/month. The series is on hiatus, so no new chapters are coming until it returns.

Kodansha titles (Witch Hat Atelier, Blue Lock, Vinland Saga) are sold as Kodansha USA digital editions. Each volume page says "Purchase to read this volume online," and each series page links a free chapter preview. Kodansha's K MANGA app is listed on the US App Store and promises "a new chapter for free every day," with in-app purchases for more. Search listings show Witch Hat Atelier and Blue Lock on K MANGA. We could not confirm Vinland Saga there, and the service blocked access from outside its region.

Delicious in Dungeon is a Yen Press release in print and digital, including a complete box set.

1. One Piece: the long adventure

One Piece follows Monkey D. Luffy's search for the legendary treasure and his goal of becoming king of the pirates, as the MANGA Plus summary puts it. It is the biggest commitment on this list. Shueisha has published 115 volumes in Japan, the newest on July 3, 2026. VIZ's English edition reached Vol. 112 on July 7, 2026, with Vol. 113 due November 10, 2026.

Who it suits: readers who want a world with a large recurring cast and don't mind waiting a long time for answers. The commitment: more than a hundred volumes, still weekly on MANGA Plus. 2. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End: quiet, reflective fantasy

VIZ describes an elf mage whose party has already defeated the Demon King, and who "will long outlive the rest of her former party" (VIZ). Shogakukan has published 15 volumes, the latest on December 18, 2025. In English, Vol. 14 came out February 10, 2026, and Vol. 15 is due December 8, 2026.

The manga went on an indefinite hiatus from October 22, 2025 so the creators could look after their health. Anime News Network still listed it as on hiatus in March 2026, and we found no official return date. Who it suits: readers who like slow, character-focused fantasy. The commitment: 15 volumes and an open-ended wait. The anime's first season ran from September 2023 to March 2024 and its second from January 16 to March 27, 2026. A third season, covering the Golden Land arc, is set for October 2027, per the same ANN report.

3. Chainsaw Man: finished, violent and unpredictable

In VIZ's summary, Denji is a broke devil hunter who is killed on a job and revived by his devil-dog Pochita as Chainsaw Man (VIZ). Part 2 ran on Shonen Jump+ from July 2022, and the series ended with its final chapter on March 25, 2026. The 24th and final Japanese volume came out June 4, 2026 and includes chapter 232, "Thank You, Chainsaw Man." In English, Vol. 21 was released June 2, 2026, and Vol. 22 is due October 13, 2026.

Who it suits: readers who want horror, dark comedy and graphic violence. The commitment: 24 volumes, with a known ending. MANGA Plus marks it "Completed" and shows the opening chapters free. The anime aired as a TV series from October to December 2022, followed by the Reze Arc film. An Assassins Arc anime is in production, per Oricon and the official anime portal. 4. Spy x Family: the easiest first manga here

VIZ sums it up as "an action-packed comedy about a fake family that includes a spy, an assassin and a telepath" (VIZ). Shueisha has published 17 volumes, with Vol. 18 scheduled for November 4, 2026. VIZ's Vol. 16 arrived September 1, 2026. New chapters appear every two weeks on MANGA Plus.

Who it suits: new readers, and anyone who prefers short comic episodes to one long plot. The commitment: 17 volumes so far, and easy to read in small pieces. The official anime site lists three TV seasons, with Season 3 starting in Japan on October 4, 2025, plus the film SPY x FAMILY CODE: White.

5. Dandadan: paranormal action and romance

Shueisha lists 25 Japanese volumes: Vol. 25 came out September 4, 2026, and Vol. 26 is due November 4. VIZ's Vol. 20 came out August 11, 2026, and Vol. 21 is due October 6, 2026. The series updates weekly on MANGA Plus.

Two anime seasons have aired, and the official anime site announced on December 21, 2025 that a third season will air in 2027, again from Science SARU.

6. Kagurabachi: focused revenge action

Chihiro Rokuhira's swordsmith father is killed by sorcerers who steal his enchanted blades, and Chihiro sets out with the seventh and final blade to get them back (VIZ). It is the youngest series here: Shueisha's first volume came out February 2, 2024, and Vol. 12 arrived September 4, 2026. In English, Vol. 8 came out August 4, 2026, and Vol. 9 is due November 3, 2026. It updates weekly on MANGA Plus.

Who it suits: readers who want sword fights and a revenge plot with a single clear goal. The commitment: the smallest backlog of the ongoing picks (12 volumes), so you can catch up before the anime. The official anime site says the Cypic-produced TV anime is "scheduled to begin broadcasting in April 2027."

7. Witch Hat Atelier: detailed art and learnable magic

In Kodansha USA's description, Coco has given up on becoming a witch because "everybody knows magicians are born, not made," until she secretly watches the traveling magician Qifrey cast a spell. Kodansha USA lists the series as "Ongoing" with 14 English volumes. Vol. 14 came out in print and digital on March 17, 2026. Japan is ahead: Kodansha released Vol. 16 on April 23, 2026.

Who it suits: readers who care about art and about magic with clear rules. The commitment: 14 English volumes, published roughly one a year recently (Vol. 13 was January 14, 2025). Season 1 of the anime finished its Japanese broadcast in June 2026, and a second season is in production and will stream on Crunchyroll, per Crunchyroll. 8. Blue Lock: soccer as a survival contest

After Japan's 2018 World Cup loss, 300 young strikers are gathered to find one egoist ace (Kodansha). Kodansha has published 40 Japanese volumes, the latest on August 17, 2026. In English the digital edition moves fast: Vol. 39 came out September 15, 2026, with Vol. 40 due November 24. Print is behind. Vol. 34 came out in print September 22, 2026, and Vol. 35 is set for October 20.

Who it suits: readers who like rivalry and tactics more than team camaraderie. The commitment: 40 volumes and still running. Read it digitally if you want to be close to Japan. Kodansha's page lists two TV anime seasons, from October 2022 and October 2024.

9. Vinland Saga: a finished historical epic

Kodansha USA's summary starts with Thorfinn's childhood, a mercenary raid, and his vow to kill Askeladd, the man who murdered his father (Kodansha USA). Makoto Yukimura ended the series with chapter 220 in Afternoon on July 25, 2025. Kodansha published the 29th and final Japanese volume on September 22, 2025.

Kodansha USA marks the series "Complete" and publishes it as 15 omnibus volumes. Vol. 14 came out May 27, 2025, and the final Vol. 15 is due October 6, 2026 in print and digital. Who it suits: readers who want a protagonist whose values change over the story, set in the Viking era. The commitment: 15 thick books with a finished ending. The first anime season premiered in July 2019 and ran 24 episodes, per ANN. The official anime site also covers Season 2.

10. Delicious in Dungeon: complete fantasy about food and ecology

Yen Press sells the complete series in 14 volumes, plus a box set released December 10, 2024. Ryoko Kui ran the manga in Kadokawa's Harta from February 2014 to September 2023. Kadokawa published the final Japanese volume on December 15, 2023, and Yen Press's final Vol. 14 followed in print and digital on July 23, 2024.

Who it suits: fantasy readers who like to know how a world works: what monsters eat, how a dungeon feeds itself. The commitment: 14 volumes, finished, with English caught up. Studio Trigger's anime ran 24 episodes on Netflix from January 2024. A second season will stream globally on Netflix from October 2027, per ANN.
